NIST, ONC plan measures, testing to improve health IT usability | Government Health IT

NIST, ONC plan measures, testing to improve health IT usability | Government Health IT

This should be an interesting project to follow. Just like with standardized testing of students, it will not be easy to identify a reliable, pertinent, and easily quantifiable set of measures of usability. Number of clicks involved in certain basic activities will be one measure for certain. Some may find pre-filled templates to be usable, while I feel that those are a dangerous habit and would find well constructed pick-lists more usable. I have used 3 outpatient and 2 inpatient EMR systems, and all have been clumsy but good in their own ways. We shall see!

Oral Contraceptives Containing Drospirenone Carry Higher Thrombosis Risk Than Those with Levonorgestrel - Physician's First Watch

Oral Contraceptives Containing Drospirenone Carry Higher Thrombosis Risk Than Those with Levonorgestrel - Physician's First Watch

While all hormonal contraceptives carry a blood-clot risk, as does pregnancy, this is an important factor when balancing risk for a particular person vs benefit of a particular hormone combination. Drispirenone has been very beneficial for young women with PCOS, but I will be even more cautious about discussing blood clot risks and lifestyle modifiers, such as smoking. Nothing is entirely safe!

InfoViewer: Single-Dose Montelukast May Attenuate Pediatric Exercise-Induced Bronchospasm

InfoViewer: Single-Dose Montelukast May Attenuate Pediatric Exercise-Induced Bronchospasm

While this is an industry-sponsored study, it does begin to look at the potential for using singulair for those with exercise induced bronchospasm.  I would probably head this direction for an athlete who truly does not have night or other frequent asthma symptoms that would warrant a steroid controller, but has bronchospasm with exercise and needs to exercise > 2x per week. Unfortunately, the patients who normally fit into that category are teens in whom Singulair has been associated with mood disorder.  No silver bullet for asthma, but this could be a reasonable part of the arsenal!

The Business of Being Born

The Business of Being Born

This is an excellent though often frightening look at where US childbirth has gone vs other western countries.  Being on the 'receiving' end of hospital-delivered babies, I have also had a sense that we have entered a spiral of medicalization and created complications... very scary!  But the litigious nature of this country makes it nearly impossible for the OB world to do anything "less" than maximal intervention.

Today’s youth are connected, concerned and confident in their ability to make a difference in the world. That’s why GoodGuide has enlisted the help of the youth at GreenMyParents to provide us feedback on how to make our site as useful and relevant to their and their family’s lives as possible.

In the coming months, youth participants will be posting about their experience using GoodGuide on our blog. We’ll be paying close attention to what they have to say.
