Oral Contraceptives Containing Drospirenone Carry Higher Thrombosis Risk Than Those with Levonorgestrel - Physician's First Watch

While all hormonal contraceptives carry a blood-clot risk, as does pregnancy, this is an important factor when balancing risk for a particular person vs benefit of a particular hormone combination. Drispirenone has been very beneficial for young women with PCOS, but I will be even more cautious about discussing blood clot risks and lifestyle modifiers, such as smoking. Nothing is entirely safe!
